Educational Qualification for BDS admission:
For getting admission to the BDS course offered by different government colleges, candidates must have completed their 10+2 or senior secondary examination with not less than 50% of aggregate marks in biology, chemistry and physics.
In addition, candidates should also get through the Common Entrance Examination conducted by most of the states for admitting students to the BDS course in Government dental colleges.
Duration of the course:
Initially, the duration of BDS course in India was four years followed by one year for internship, but now the Dental Council of India it has converted BDS as a five-year course without internship period.
Higher studies after BDS:
After successful completion of BDS course from a college recognized by the Dental Council of India, candidates can take up MDS course and this course is offered with different specializations like:
• Public Health dentistry
• Oral medicine & radiology
Paedodontics & preventive dentistry
• Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopaedics
• Periodontology
• Oral & Maxillofacial surgery
• Conservative dentistry & Endodontics
• Prosthodontics & crown bridge
The candidates can also take up one year post graduate diploma course in dentistry in any of the above-mentioned specializations after completion of the BDS course.
Job prospects after BDS:
Nowadays, with the increasing awareness among people about dental health, the number of dental professional required has increased as a result of outburst of several new private dental college and hospitals, particularly in the northern part of India. This has paved the way for the increasing demand for dental professionals in the northern part of India.
These professionals can find job opportunities in either government or private dental hospitals or they can also practice by establishing their own dental clinic. Even candidates can take up jobs as lecturers in dental colleges after completing their MDS.
